T1000™ Stampable Overlay Installation Guide

T1000™ Stampable Overlay is a polymer modified, cementious material designed for
resurfacing and texturing stable, non-moving concrete floors and hardscapes.
Recommended installation depth is between 1/4" and 1/2". T1000TM Stampable Overlay
is available in cement gray or white. Both can be used in conjunction with Butterfield Color
T1000™ Color Packs to achieve a multitude of colors. The color packs are available in all
Uni-Mix® Integral Colors and are designed for use with one bag of overlay. (The white may be used to achieve more vibrant color variations).

BEFORE USING, READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE T1000™ STAMPABLE OVERLAY TECHNICAL DATA SHEET AND MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET.

STEP 1 - SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Cleaning:

Proper surface preparation is critical to a successful application of T1000TM Stampable Overlay. The concrete substrate temperature must be at 45° F to 85° F (7° to 30° C). The concrete substrate must be thoroughtly cleaned using high pressure water or TSP (tri-soduim phosphate) and water with a scrub brush, the rinsed thoroughly. Remove all potential bond breakers such as greased, oils, silicones, paints, sealants, curing and sealing compounds, drywall taping compound, etc. In the case of paints, sealants or overly slick hard troweled floors, mechanical removal and/or abrading by means of sanding, scarifying or shot blasting may be necessary to achieve proper bonding.

Patching:

Existing cracks on the concrete slab will most likely come through the T1000TM Stampable Overlay. A slurry mix of T1000TM Stampable Overlay and water serves as an excellent filler for cracks prior to the fianl overlay installation process. If the areas are in excess of 1/2" deep, use of a larger aggregate in the slurry mix or multiple lifts of the slurry mix may be needed. Make sure to prime the cracks before applying the slurry mix.

STEP 2 - PRIMING THE SURFACE

Before appling the primer be sure that the surface is thoroughly clean and dry. Mix one gallon of water with one gallon of Butterfield Color® T1000TM Concrete Primer. Apply an even coat to the prepared substrate using a paint roller, soft push broom, squeegee or sprayer. Coverage is approximately 200 sq. ft. per gallon. Take care to protectadjacent surfaces from over spray or splash. Note: (For overly porous surfaces a second application of T1000TM Concrete Primer may be applied at full strength.) Once the T1000TM Concrete Primer has dried to tack free, installation may proceed. T1000TM Stampable Overlay may be applied as much as 24 hours after application of primer as long as weather is suitable. If the primed surface becomes wet, re-application will be necessary. Note: On large jobs when installation is to be made in multiple pours over a common concrete substrate area, care must be taken to protect adjacent prepared concrete substrate surface from stamping release powder or liquid.

STEP 3 - MIXING

Mix and install when ambeint temperatures are between 45° F to 85° F (7° to 30° C). Use 3.7 quarts (3.5L) potable water per 55-pound (25kg) bag of Butterfield Color® T1000TM Stampable Overlay. When temperature or humidity changes affect water demand, make small adjustments to the amount of mixing water as needed to achieve proper working consistency. Do not over water. Be sure to measure water accurately.

Always add water to the container first. Then, if color is to be used, slowly add the Butterfield Color® T1000TM Color Pack. Mix the color and water thoroughly using a 600rpm drill and paddle or mortar mixer. Note: (If using a commercial mixer make sure ot use a mortar mixer and not a concrete mixer.) Once the color is mixed, slowly add the bag of Butterfield Color® T1000TM Stampable Overlay. Continue to mix for a minimum of 3 minutes until a smooth, uniform, lump-free consistency and a streak-free color has been achieved. Make sure to be consistent with the amount of water and the mixing time between batches. Clean the mixing container thoruoughly after each batch to ensure consistency with the mix. If mixture loses its plasticity do not re-temper with water or add previously mixed material to new batches.

STEP 4 - INSTALLATION

Layout:

Distribute the freshly mixed T1000TM Stampable Overlay as evenly as possible using a trowel or gauge rake. Be sure to gauge the overlay depth equal to the grout line on the stamp pattern to be used. Keeping a consistent depth is improtant. Make sure not to overwork the material when laying it out. Troweling to a smooth surface is desired; however, small trowel marks will be covered when stamping giegins. Always keep a wet edge when installing the material to avoid creating any cold joints. For larger projects, use of a Fresno may be necessary.

Stamping: Make sure to plan the stamp layout before starting to stamp. Imprinting time will vary widely depending on temperature and humidity. Begin stamping as soon as mixture has set sufficiently to achieve a clean impression, usually 20 to 60 minutes after placement. When the surface is ready for stamping apply a thin coat of Butterfield Color® Clear Liquid Release on the surface. For large areas spray the release agent on the initial area to be stamped and make sure to stay ahead of the stamping process with the release agent. Begin stamping the perimeter of the pour with the texture skin. After texturing the perimeter begin laying down the rigid stamps. After a complete row of rigid stamps are laid out, begin tamping the placed stamps. Note: (Depending on how wet the material is, the intitial stamps may just need to be walked on to achieve an imprint) Use the flexible stamps for the wall lines. The texture skin, chisels and roller wheels should be used throughout the pour as needed to fix any undesirable areas. Note: If an occasional double grout line occurs and goes unnoticed, these areas can be removed the next day by using a margin trowel.

Existing control joins should be mapped out prior to placement of T1000TM Stampable Overlay and re-cut before cracking occurs, normally within 14-24 hours at 70° F (21° C). Do not install Butterfield Color® T1000TM Stampable Overlay if rain is expected within 24 hours after placement.

STEP 5 - ANTIQUING, CURING AND SEALING

If Butterfield Color® Clear Liquid Release was used during the stamping process and a second antiquing color is desired, follow these steps: Allow the T1000TM Stampable Overlay to set for a minimum of 24 hours. With a pump sprayer apply a thin coat of Butterfield Color® Clear GuardTM Cure and Seal over the entire area. Allow ample time for the cure & seal to dry. Mix 1/4 cup of Butterfield Color® Perma-Cast® Antiquing Release powder with 1 gallon of mineral spirits and shake well in a metal pump sprayer. With constant pressure in the sprayer, apply a liberal amount of the mixture over the stamped area to create the antiquing look. Note: Continuously shake sprayer so release agent does not settle out to the bottom. Be sure to plan out the area to be antiqued so as not to walk on the areas already sprayed.

Make sure all of the antiquing mixture has dried thoroughly before applying a final coat of Butterfield Color® Clear GuardTM Cure and Seal. The final coat may be applied by spraying with a metal pump sprayer. If the job does not require antiquing, the sealer may also be applied with a tight nap roller. Make sure to apply the material evenly and keep it from puddling in the textured areas and the grout lines.

Curing time varies with ambient and substrate temperatures and humidity. The surface can be walked on gently approximately 14-24 hours after placement at 70° F (21° C). Cure for a minimum of 36 hours before opening the surface to light traffic, and for 2-3 days for normal traffic. A full 28 day cure is required for heavy traffic.
